Abstract:
AbstractAli Asghar Seyedabadi starts his article by posing questions about the act of retelling and believes that each retelling of a text is actually a reading/interpretation of that text. He notes that in the process of the retelling, literary heritage is manipulated to share something new with the audience today. He explains that a change of time, the change of moral themes and aesthetic paradigms along with the personal experience of the reteller leads to a new reading and interpretation of literary heritage. He counts the interpretive approaches to literary heritage. In his literature review, Seyedabadi refers to the theoretical standpoint of Shiraz University Center for Children’s Literature Studies about the act of reading. He indicates how we encounter two interpretations when we are considering a retelling in the form of a picturebook: The first is the writer’s and the illustrator’s interpretation of literary heritage and the second is the illustrator’s interpretation of the writer’s reading of literary heritage. According to Seyedabadi, how we encounter literary heritage determines the extent of creativity in the retellings. Seyedabadi brings examples from Shahnameh retellings and describes his cooperation with the illustrator in creating a picturebook.
