This paper addresses a problematic issue in the world of
literature and philosophy; that it is "art and beauty" in terms of their
nature, the relationship that exists between them and their respective
functions. The famous Russian writer and philosopher Lev Tolstoy
addressed this issue; criticizing the views of many thinkers working
in this field, trying to clarify the concept of (art and beauty),
specifying the extent of the connection between them, and stating
the function and purpose of each of them. So that, the research
achieves its objectives in clarifying this issue and its coverage of its
branches revolving around five axes: The first axis explained the
relationship between art and beauty, truth and goodness, and the
second axis was concerned with showing that art is a tool of
communication, interaction and a benign infection that spreads
between the sender and the receiver. The third axis also defined the
religious ground which art must be based –according to Tolstoy, as
well as determining the ethical functions that it must assume,
pointing to the rejection of Tolstoy saying "art to art". As for the
fourth axis, it showed the characteristics and feature of both real art
and fake art, and the difference between them was clear, and finally
the fifth axis came to highlight the nature and importance of the
relationship between science and art. That reciprocal and mutually
supportive relationship based on effect and influence, and after that
the research concluded with a set of results, generalizations and a
set of recommendations.
