The knowledge of the self is presential (uūrī) and intuitive (shuhūdī) knowledge
of the soul and its levels. It is not possible to attain this type of knowledge except
through struggle, self-awareness and practical wayfaring though which the wayfarer
finds the luminous reality of the soul with all his being and will be immersed with
joy and pleasure out of its presential knowledge and manifestations and
illuminations shed upon her.
The soul is of more hidden dimensions and levels such as imaginal and
intellectual and supra-intellectual levels that can be actualized through spiritual
exercise and struggle. The wayfarer can witness these levels directly without any
veil through presential knowledge. The goal of knowing the self is annihilation
(fanā’) in God and intuitive knowledge of the essential poverty (al-faqr al-dhātī) of
the soul before God. It is possible for certain states and amazing effects to occur
during the wayfarer’s journey which would astound the common people, such as the
ability to give news of unknown events or being able to affect the natural order and
other similar abilities. In this article the astonishing effects of self knowledge will be
explained according to the views expressed in Islamic mysticism and transcendent
philosophy, with specific attention to the causes and origins of these effects. Ibn
Arabī focuses on some of these effects such as the station of kun; the creation of
multiple bodies, which is possible for a group of saints known as the budalā’; and
permeation in existence (al-sarayān fī al-wujūd). Mullā Sadrā primarily focuses on
the station of one state not distracting the mystic from another state (lā yashghaluhu
sha’nun an sha’n); the attainment of the ability to leave the corporeal body at will
(khal al-badan) and give news of the unseen.
