The purpose of this study was to investigate a possible relationship between
the scores obtained from the early symptoms overtraining questionnaire and
the concentrations of salivary testosterone and cortisol in elite male body-
builders. Fifty top-level male bodybuilders (Mean£SD: age, 22.80+£3.80 yr;
height, 178+6.50 cm; weight, 86.53+10.30 kg; BMI 28.07+2.40 kg/m’ and
BF%, 9.87+2.67) volunteered to. participate in the study. They were
informed of the purpose and methods of the study before giving written
consent. Immediately after 15 hours interval between the heavy exercise
session and first hormonal assay, three saliva samples were taken from each
subject during a rest day (24 hours without training). To avoid the effects of
the circadian rhythm and variations in food intake on hormonal secretion, the
three saliva samples were taken immediately after getting up (8 am), before
lunch (11 am), and in the evening (5 pm) to determine concentrations of
these two hormones Then, subjects were asked to complete the overtraining
questionnaire (devised by the consensus group on overtraining of the French
Society of Sports Medicine) contains 54 question requiring answers of "yes"
or "no" on the day that the saliva samples were taken. Correlations between
hormonal data and the score obtained in the overtraining questionnaire were
analysed using the Spearman correlation coefficient. Data analyses showed a
significant negative correlation between the questionnaire score and
testosterone concentration (p<0.05, r=-0.53), but not between the
questionnaire score and cortisol concentration (p>0.05, r=0.22). Also, A
significant negative correlation was found between the testosterone/cortisol
ratio and the questionnaire score (p<0.05, r=-0.52). The results showed that
testosterone concentration and testosterone/cortisol ratio did show a
significant negative correlation to the score obtained in the overtraining
survey. Also, these results show that it is more useful to follow variations in
testosterone (an anabolic hormone) than variations in cortisol (a catabolic
hormone) to determine the degree of tiredness.
