Majority of the studies have showed that short-term creatine
supplementation increases performance in various intermittent sprint tests,
but, studies which use caffeine supplementation or simultaneously creatine
and caffeine supplementation in high-intensity intermittent performance
showed different results. The aim of this study was to determine the effects
of short-term creatine and caffeine supplementation on performance time
and fatigue index in basketball players of Khoozestan province. Therefore,
32 club basketball players were assigned to 1) Creatine group (Cr: 5g of
creatine monohydrate 4 times per day for 5 d), 2) caffeine group (Ca: 400
mg caffeine, 1 hour before post-test), 3) creatine and caffeine group (similar
dose of creatine and caffeine), 4) placebo group (similar dose of starch as
creatine placebo and 1 glass of coffee as caffeine placebo). Repeated high-
intensity endurance test was performed twice which included 6 set of
completed 5, 10 and 15 meters shuttle run on 30s intervals at 0:00, 0:30,
1:00, 1:30, 2:00, and 2:30 min. To analyze data, MANOVA, Tukey post-hoc
test and paired t-test were used. Results showed that Cr, Ca and CC
supplementation compared with pre-test significantly improved performance
time and fatigue percent (P<0.05). Performance time and fatigue percent in
Cr, Ca and CC groups reduced significantly compared to placebo. No
significant differences were observed among Cr, Ca and CC groups in
performance time and fatigue percent. The present study showed that
creatine, caffeine and creatine plus caffeine supplementations result in
improvements in performance time and fatigue index and that they were
useful for high-intensity intermittent performance.
