Abstract
ThisstudyIsbased onthe works of Platoandaims to present the image of the sophist and its effects on the educational system of Athens using descriptive and conceptual analysis, explains the oldness of the sophists, the change in the meaning of the “sophist”,emphasizes on separating wise old sophists from the sophist movement and presents image of teacher sophists by discussing three issues, and thatthe sophists are identified as being artful and persuading others into contradictory arguments. According to the first issue, being a sophist doesn’t always mean impiety, but rather limited insights along with prejudices and preconceptions would result in being pursued as religious criminals only because of being marked as a sophist. According to thelatter, despite slandersand oppositions to the claims of the sophists, they were not completely despicable and unpopular, but were even sometimes truly praised. Moreover, studying the teachings of the sophists showed that not only their teachings bear values of their own, but also in certain fields of knowledge, no one has been as wise as they were. According to the third, Plato never negated the wages taken by the sophists, and believed that the origin of the objections to these wages were the unmannered youth who were the product of the sophists’ rhetoric. He cleared the accusation of being opportunists from the sophists by showing the fairness in wages received by some sophists and unpaid teachings received by Socrates.
