Since ancient times, scholars were interested in indicating
the relationship between the openings and purposes and their
impact in the Arabic poetry, as the critics found that openings
have much to do with purposes, which appears in this type of
Arabic poetry wrapped in a thin veil of flirtation, liquor, remains,
trip, hunting and chasing pictures. The poet waves these elements
indicating his purpose and intention. This opening was not limited
to a verse or two, rather it might widen to include most of the
poem, which the poet has chosen for the opening of his/ her
poem in order to provide an introduction to his/ her purposes.
My choice was to study this feature in the Abu Alwaleed Ibn
Zaidoun’s poetry (394H - 463H), being considered as one of the
most famous poets who enriched the literary life in its brighter
Andalus times, when poetry had its political and social position
in the royal courts of caliphs, kings and princes, with its book
mostly divided into flirtation, praise and propitiation.
Ibn Zaidoun’s praising poem mostly begins with praise as
an opening (mostly with Naseeb), such introduction bear implied
signals linked to poem’s subject matter and the poetry’s praise
purpose. The study contained selected models of praise poetry
in different stages of ibn Zaidoun’s political life in Cordoba and
Seville.
