Grammaticalization process of engār / engārīThe aim of this article is to investigate the process of grammaticalization of the two adverbs “engār” and “engārī”. To achieve this aim, previous studies regarding these two adverbs were put under consideration and after reintroducing the mechanisms and principles involved in grammaticalization of linguistic forms, the process of change of “engār” was described focusing on Middle Persian texts as well as Early New Persian (post-Islamic) works, in either prose or verse forms. In Middle Persian, the verb hangār- / hangārd was used to mean “to consider”. After going through certain semantic changes, it began to be used in the sense of “to count” and then “to assume”. Later on, the imperative form of the verb was considered as a perfect candidate to be grammaticalized: in specific contexts, the verb was moved to the beginning of the sentence, gradually fixed in that position and was obliged to be followed by a subordinate clause as its object. So that, “engār” was decategorized and reanalyzed, changed from verb to adverb, in Early New Persian to represent irreal modality. Furthermore, in New Persian there is evidence that the adverb “engār” has evidential functions and shows that the speaker is not sure whether or not the information he/she quotes is accurate. On the other hand, in Middle Persian, thse morpheme ē was attached to the present stem of the verb to form the optative mood mainly functioning as a device to represent uncertainty. Since early stages of New Persian, modality has been hardly represented in the construction of the verb, so by the means of reanalysis, and after phonological change of ē to ī, “engārī” was decategorized too and was considered as a modal adverb implying simile, allegory or uncertainty. keywords: “engār”, “engārī”, grammaticalization, Middle Persian, Early New Persian
