Background and Aim: Exercise can causes neurogenesis in the brain of adult mammals. Until now few studies investigated how the effect (intensity, duration and type) of exercise on neurogenesis. Our goal was examine the effect of the running distance on cell proliferation in the hippocampus of adult male rats. Material and Method: 18 adult male rats following 1 week of familiarization with treadmill were randomly divided into three groups: Control group (n=6), 30-min runner group (n=6) and 60-min runner group (n=6). Rats in runner groups were subjected to daily 30-min and 60-min treadmill exercise sessions for 14 consecutive days. At the last 10 days animals received daily injections of bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) in a specific dose to label dividing cells. After 48 hours of the last session of running, the animals were sacrificed and their brain was removed for immunohistochemichal studies. Result: One-way ANOVA test showed significant increments in cell proliferation among the runner groups with control group and between runner groups statistically (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that running regardless the distances increases the cell proliferation in the hippocampus of adult rats. In addition we demonstrated that more running distance per day is more effective in increasing the cell proliferation.
