In the present study, Environmental Performance Index (EPI) and the Percentage of Population below national Poverty Lines (PPP) were used to examine the relationship between poverty and environmental degradation. Data on the Environmental Performance Index were obtained from Yale University 2020 report. National PPP data were also extracted from the World Bank website. Pearson correlation and linear regression were used to analyze the relationship between the two parameters. Findings showed that the correlation between the two variables is -0.505. So reduction of poverty improves the environmental performance index of countries by half a unit. Regression analysis between the two variables also showed that about 26% of the changes in the dependent variable are explained by the independent variable. Regression analysis with respect to the income grouping of countries by the World Bank also showed that there is a negative and significant relationship between low-income countries and their environmental performance index.
