Objectives: The objectives of this research were to identify and prioritize the educational needs of Iranian elderly as a prerequisite for any educational intervention.
Materials and Methods: After obtaining ethics code and written satisfying consent of participants, qualitative method for interview and content analysis to identify the needs and Delphi method to prioritize them were used. Three target groups were interviewed: 1) specialists in the fields related to education and older adults, 2) those around older adults, and 3) older adults. Perpesive sampling was performed to achieve maximum variation and interviews were performed to achieve theoretical saturation. Interviews were conducted until theoretical saturation and the final sample consisted of 45 people.
Results: By analyzing the content of these needs by Sterberg method, the total needs were categorized and finally 13 themes were identified which were sent to the participants for prioritization using Delphi method and finally after two stages, the participants agreed on the priority of the most basic needs 96%, which were: 1) physical health, 2) the ability to manage negative emotions and mental states, 3) self-knowledge, 4) feelings of satisfaction, 5) interpersonal skills and 6) Self-learning skills.
Conclusions: With age, physical health and negative emotions management skills decline and with the limitation of the circle of friends and relatives due to retirement or death, social health is also at risk. Proper knowledge about old age and acquiring self-learning skills are key elements to overcome the challenges of this period. In this regard, educational centers for the older adults are able to provide healthy social interactions in addition to the necessary knowledge and skills to manage the physical and mental health.
