"As an independent and critical discipline that deals with the art of statesmanship and distribution of power, political science should be able to bring about transformations in governmental methods and lead the society to a new and dynamic path commensurate with people's political aspirations.
(7l The Pyramid of Faculty Members of Universities and the Situation of Scholars During the early years after the establishment of the Islamic Republic and as a result of purges and emigration of a number of professors and the refusal of a high percentage of Iranian students abroad to repatriate, we were faced with shortage of faculty members in universities.
Out of 400 professors who were dismissed or purged, 15 were political scientists from three educational centers, namely the University of Tehran, Melli (now Shahid Beheshti) University and the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences.
According to statistics published by the Ministry of Culture and Higher Education during the second semester of the academic year 1997- 98, from 1978-1996, the number of faculty members with the rank of professor, compared with total faculty members, decreased from 6.
In other words although the number of faculty members at Iranian universities during the 20 years after the establishment of the Islamic Republic has trebled from 9,579 in 1978 to 26,396 in 1996, the majority of faculty members did not achieve high academic qualifications.
Aside from the Islamic Azad University, which has opened a political science branch in most cities, more than 20 non-profit making and non governmental institutes have obtained authorization from the High Council of Cultural Revolution to select students."
