Paleographic and Epigraphic studies study epigraphs, decipher and interpret them,
perform historical and linguistic analyses on them, set date on them and classify them.
Epigraphs, regardless of the material on which they are recorded, are considered ancient
or historical documents and usually include most of the information extracted from nonepigraphic
documents. Epigraphs, ranging from Cyrus's Charter and Behistun Inscription
to an isolated tomb script, sometimes include significant documentary information;
reading and deciphering this information or in documentological terms, copying and
translating them, illuminates lots of dark points in the history; sometimes the information
found in a tomb script will not be found in any other valid and documented book. The
material of the epigraphs and their structural difference with other types of documents
such as dermographs (skin writings) or specially paper writings which are mostly
examined in documentology, should not be excluded from the scope of such studies.
The present paper offers a brief introduction of different types of Iranian epigraphs and
discusses some documentological points about them; at the end, to give an example, it
presents a documentological introduction of ShapourInscription onKa'ba-ye Zartosht
(Cube of Zoroaster).
