Contemporary sociologists employ the concept of social capital to examine the quality and quantity of social relationships. Social capital refers to the resources which individuals and groups can gain by having relationships with each other. The majority of social researchers emphasize the role of networks and civic norms in the definition of social capital. It is usually regarded as private and common goods because social capital, as the product of social relationships, functions in the favor of its producer and also of others. During the last decade, it was discovered that increasing numbers of domains are influenced by social capital. For this reason, demand for the empirical measurement of social capital exceeds its supply. However, the conceptualization of social capital has received more attention than its measurement. The present paper explores some models for the measurement of social capital as proposed by various researchers. These models measure social capital at two levels: collective and personal. The present paper examines the personal level of social capital and its relationship with network analysis. In doing so, the applications of generator methods for measurement of inequality in social capital are discussed. In the final section of the paper, the strengths and weaknesses of all three generator methods are explored. It seems that, by employing these methods, new forms of social inequalities can be identified among social groups.
