Abstract:
Nowadays, the influence of popular music, including classical, artistic, and folk genres, on developed and developing countries is inevitable. Additionally, emerging forms of music, known as popular music, have garnered significant interest in these countries. Although numerous researchers have studied this phenomenon using various techniques, they have primarily focused on large urban cities, neglecting non-urban or rural areas as a key factor. However, with the expansion of communication and the characteristic of cultural adaptation of ethnic groups, new types of non-urban or rural music have emerged in a way that cannot be classified as local music of those lands. Furthermore, due to the structure of these types of music, they can be classified as new forms of popular music.
To provide a clear definition of this genre of music, this research first presents the opinions of scholars and thinkers in the field. In addition to the three main streams (classical, artistic, and folk) and the middle streams, a fourth distinct stream is introduced in this article and referred to as "Ethnic Popular Music." By considering definitions, conducting interviews, performing fieldwork, and analyzing the music, the following observations are made regarding this new occurrence in Khuzestan's Arab musical culture: the first type is popular Shaabi music, which was influenced by Iraqi popular music during the last decade of the 20th century; the second type is popular Arab-Khaliji music, also known as "Harara," which was influenced by Khalij music during the first decade of the 21st century; and the third type is Arabic-Turkish music or Arabic pop, which is influenced by pop music in Arabic countries and Turkey simultaneously with the second type.
