Being inspired by Divine revelations and enlivening teachings of holy infallible
Imams, Muslim thinkers including theosophers and philosophers by utilizing their
reason as a precious gift have made deep researches on resurrection. Although the
very belief in hereafter is unanimously attested, its quality and essential analysis is a
matter of controversy. Some believed in bodily resurrection; others preferred the
doctrine of spiritual resurrection and there is a third group of scholars who believe in
both bodily and spiritual resurrection.
Meanwhile, a number of scholars, the advocates of so-called "separation school", are
against any use of reason and philosophy in religious beliefs and revealed sciences. For
them philosophical doctrines are man-made and thus inadequate in realm of doctrinal
and revealed issues and so it is essential that these two domains be separated. Professor
Hakimi, among others, is advocating this way of thought in his book Bodily Resurrection
in Transcendent Theosophy maintaining that great scholars of Islamic philosophy and
theology are also of the same separation view on the problem of bodily resurrection.
This essay is an attempt to critically examine the evidences given by professor
Hakimi in a chapter under the title "awakening words" in favor of "separation
position" from such philosophers as Al-Kindi, Abu Zeid Balkhi, Abu Nasr Farabi,
Ibn Sina and Mirza Abu 'lQasim Fendereski offering a fair judgment on the
evidential significance of the quoted remarks.
