As a pragmatist philosopher, Larry Hickman believes that Dewey has a developed philosophy of technology that is against the tradition that considers technology to be self-sufficient and inherently alien to humans. In expressing the difference between technology and technique, he pays attention to the element of knowledge and considers technology to be the result of systematic research intervention in technique. By proposing the concept of naturalized technology, Dewey introduces technology as the research that humans do on existing techniques to increase compatibility with their environment and change it according to their needs. In Dewey's productive pragmatism, technology becomes a philosophical subject, and the philosopher can use philosophical methods and tools to improve his understanding and the members of his society about the connection between the diverse aspects of technological culture and have a significant impact on the changing technological world. Hickman claims that Dewey's philosophy can reconcile technological culture with democratic values without getting caught up in holistic systems and beyond the analysis of language. However, Dewey's definition of technology turns it into a central and general concept, and in his criticism of realism, signs of the re-emergence of holistic metaphysics can be seen.
